The long time #axetheSSAF campaign has been dealt a major victory as the Federal Council of the Liberal Party of Australia endorsed a motion calling on the government to #axetheSSAF.
Here’s the text of the motion:
“That Federal Council:
a. commends the Federal Government for it’s strong and effective advocacy for free speech on Australian university campuses;
b. calls on Australian universities to implement a model code to protect freedom of speech and academic inquiry, as recommended by the French Review; and
c. encourages the Government to abolish the Student Services and Amenities Fees.”
This motion sets the campaign on good footing to continue a dialogue with Members of Parliament and Senators as we seek to once and for all end this unfair, undemocratic, $100 Million a year tax on students.
The Australian Liberal Students’ Federation was provided an oppertunity to speak on the motion and tell the delegates that:
“The SSAF is just compulsory student unionism under a different name.”; “The SSAF is an unfair, undemocratic $100 Milion a year tax on students”
The motion also referred to protecting free speech, freedom of academic inquiry and called on Universities to implement a model code to protect these freedoms.
The ALSF is pleased that the motion was passed unanimously, this shows the dedication of the Liberal Party in protecting student’s freedoms.
