FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The ALSF is deeply saddened by the passing of Wilson Gavin, President of the University of Queensland Liberal National Club.
Wilson had been working closely with the ALSF Executive to reaffiliate his club with the Federation. This loss has deeply affected many on our Executive and the wider Liberal student community.
Wilson was the subject of vile bullying and harassment online and was also the target of intense media scrutiny in the hours leading to his death.
“It’s a great shame that political discourse in this country has devolved into this tragic state. No matter your views, nobody should feel that they have nowhere to go or anyone to turn to,” said ALSF Secretary Blake Keating.
“This is a stark reminder of the importance of freedom of speech, peaceful and orderly protest, association, treating our fellow humans with respect, and recognising that we all have differing views on various issues.”
The comments we make about people can have lasting impacts, and affect people in different ways.
The Federation has been in contact with our affiliated clubs about mental health resources available to them, and we encourage them to utilise them.
In the coming days the Federation will be in contact with members of the UQLNC to ensure the appropriate services are available to them.
The Federation has written to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland to guarantee that those who need it have access to adequate mental health services on campus. The UQ Student Counselling number is: 1300 851 998
Unfortunately, we are too often reminded of the shocking statistics of suicide and self harm within young Australians, especially those within the LGBT+ community, therefore the Federation will be making a donation to Headspace Australia. An organisation dedicated to youth mental health. We encourage those who agree with our concerns to do the same.
It’s okay not to be okay. If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulty please contact the below organisations.
