FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Australian Liberal Students’ Federation is closely monitoring advice from the Commonwealth Health Department and the New South Wales Health Department with respect to COVID-19.
The Federation is still preparing for its annual meeting of Federal Council which is scheduled to be held in New South Wales in July this year.
“Currently, the advice provided by the Health Department is that non-essential public meetings of more than 500 people should not go ahead. This advice is changing week by week in response to the continuously developing situation with COVID-19.” said ALSF President Hugh Sutton.
“At this stage, the Federation doesn’t expect that Federal Council will have more than 500 people attending.”
ALSF Secretary Blake Keating stated that “The Federation does not have to make a final decision regarding our annual meeting of Federal Council until 90 days before the first scheduled session, as per the Federations Constitution.”
The Federation is considering several venues in different locations across New South Wales to help minimise the risk.
“We are actively looking at regional centers with appropriate interstate transport connections to increase the odds of the event proceeding, while ensuring that the health and safety of our delegates is a top priority” stated ALSF President Hugh Sutton.
The Universities Australia common vacation week is scheduled to be on the week of 6 to 10 July 2020. The Federation will make its final decision regarding Federal Council on or around the 10th of April 2020.
“For the time being we are carefully watching what the Government’s advice is and preparing to react to a number of different scenarios. It is entirely possible that the Federation is unable to hold our AGM until late 2020 or beyond” said ALSF Secretary Blake Keating.
“In which case the ALSF Federal Executive would have to make a determination regarding how that is managed”.
More information will be provided in the event of decisions being made by the Federation in the coming months.
